Resonance Across Generations: A History of Taiwanese Art

Resonance Across Generations: A History of Taiwanese Art
Opening at 2025 Art Tainan, Liang Gallery presents an exhibition anchored by LIAO Chi-Chun’s 1959 masterpiece “Tainan Confucius Temple (Wengchang Pavilion)," exploring how artists have captured Taiwan’s landscapes and stories through their distinctive perspectives. The exhibition unites established masters LIAO Chi-Chun, YANG San-Lang, HUNG Rui-Lin, and SHEN Che-Tsai with contemporary artists CHOU Tai-Chun, CHEN Pu, and CHEN I-Chun, illustrating the rich evolution of artistic expression through diverse vocabularies and media.
The master artists have bestowed upon Taiwan an invaluable artistic legacy through their keen observations. Born in Tainan, SHEN Che-Tsai’s early studies under LIAO Chi-Chun profoundly influenced his mastery of color, while his artistic practice and teaching made lasting contributions to Tainan’s cultural landscape, his works embodying a deep connection to his hometown. YANG San-Lang, drawing inspiration from French Impressionism, demonstrates extraordinary command of light, shadow, and color in “Ruifang Sijiaoting," offering a unique interpretation of Taiwan’s landscapes. Through delicate brushwork, HUNG Rui-Lin portrays the distinctive character of northern Taiwan’s mountain towns in works such as “View from Jiufen" and “View from Jinguashi," pieces that transcend mere documentation to become powerful symbols of national memory.
Contemporary artists expand these artistic horizons through innovative media and perspectives. CHEN I-Chun creates poetic narrative spaces between reality and fiction, addressing Taiwan’s grassroots social issues through video art and experimental animation in works like “United Unity" and “The Herd of Wolves on a Distant Mountain." CHOU Tai-Chun’s recent works “The Land Will be Cleansed by Rains and Tears" and “Journey to the Unknown" explore the intersection of historical memory and contemporary vision, reflecting deeply on local history and identity. CHEN Pu bridges traditional hand drawing with sculpture and new media art, his “Epiphytic Monster" series exemplifying innovative possibilities in the fusion of tradition and technology.
Staging this exhibition in Tainan, an ancient capital rich in cultural heritage, carries profound significance. This city not only stands witness to crucial developments in Taiwan’s art history but also serves as fertile ground nurturing artistic inspiration across generations. From the master artists’ meticulous depiction of Taiwan’s local customs to contemporary artists’ pioneering exploration of new media, the exhibition illuminates the natural flow between inheritance and innovation in Taiwanese art. Each work embodies an artist’s deep emotional connection to this land, collectively weaving a rich and vibrant cultural tapestry of Taiwanese art.
