Modern Chinese Landscape Art and Modern Abstract Minimalist Art

Inheriting the cultural essence of Eastern landscape traditions while embracing innovative contemporary abstract thought, Liang Gallery presents “Modern Chinese Landscape Art and Modern Abstract Minimalist Art." This exhibition brings together nine distinguished artists’ seminal works, exploring the diverse interpretations of Chinese art from traditional landscapes to modern abstraction.

The exhibition takes inspiration from Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei’s “Lu Chai," which captures the profound artistic conception of hearing human voices in an empty mountain. This poem, written in turbulent times, resonates with contemporary artists’ pursuit of inner tranquility amid modern chaos. YU Cheng-Yao’s modern landscapes from the 1940s and Yu Peng’s works from the 1980s present contemporary interpretations of traditional brushwork and spatial conception. Lang Ching-Shan strove to reproduce Chinese landscape painting into photographic form, creating a complex composition style known as “composite picture.” Hsiao Chin’s abstract expressionist works from the 1950s and Richard LIN’s “White Series" from the 1960s demonstrate a unique path from Eastern aesthetics to minimalism.

Yuyu YANG’s modernist abstract sculptures and LEE Chung-Chung’s modern abstract ink paintings further expand the expressive forms of Eastern art. The exhibition also features Aluaiy Kaumakan’s “lemikalik” installation art exploring human-land connections and HSU Chia-Wei’s digital media works examining contemporary issues, showcasing artistic innovation in the new era.

From capturing the essence of landscapes to expressing abstract thoughts, artists have incorporated natural vitality and humanistic contemplation into their works. Like the artistic conception in Wang Wei’s poem, contemporary artists find inner peace and transcendence through their creations in our tumultuous times.

We are honored to announce that artist Chien-Chi Chang’s video work “Side Chain" has been selected for inclusion in the Film sector of Art Basel Hong Kong 2025. Continuing his profound humanitarian concerns, Chang constructs a narrative space that transcends pure visual documentation through the use of multiple media, opening new dimensions of viewing and contemplation for the audience.

Liang Gallery is pleased to present “A History of Histories," a solo exhibition by CHOU Tai-Chun, marking his return after four years. From November 15th to December 15th, this exhibition showcases CHOU Tai-Chun’s continued exploration of Taiwan’s historical context and land transformation. Since 2021, his frequent residencies in eastern Taiwan have allowed him to engage with various tribal communities, learning through their oral histories and family narratives, deepening his connection to the land and transforming these internal contemplations into a series of perceptual pathways of thought.
