Regardless of self, figure, or group, portraits project the personal feelings of artists and convey certain objects that usually capture their attention. However, even more so, the unique characteristics portraits lies in their ability to condense the consciousness of an era, presenting the social and cultural phenomena of that time, and revealing changes and pulsations of its trends. Using their own history to tell a story, portraits depict and record the facial appearances of each era, as well as pass down their spirit. The exhibition, “Stories of the Big Era", brings together more than twenty portraits by important senior artists of Taiwan, such as Chen Cheng-po, Liao Chi-Chun, Li Mei-Shu, Yen Shui-Long, Yang San-Lang, Lee Shih-Chiao, Chang Wan-Chuan, Hong Rui-Lin, and Hsiao Ju-Sung. With theme-oriented perspectives imbued with deeply local colors, these works also reveal the cultural consciousness and humanistic ideas of Taiwan as it faced colonial rule and modernization. The opening reception will be personally led by Professor Li Chin-Hsien, who has dedicated many years of his life to studying Taiwan art history.
