An odyssey exploring the phenomenon of civilization, natural environment, and humanities, “Leo Wang Solo Exhibition – The Stargazers”, is on view at Liang Gallery from August 5th to August 27th. This collection of work attempts to elevate the original poetic nature of paintings, utilizing the elements of literature as a medium and illustration as a means of narrative. Wang presents his own sci-fi fantasies through the twists of abstract and figurative expressions, skillfully applying them to existing visual forms. An indication of Wang’s extended creative boundaries, his play with established forms, executes his fantasies into actual practice.
Through the artist’s objective intervention, Wang develops his only way of interpreting the subjective world – all additional foreign information ought to be processed by internal comprehension and transformed into what he intends to convey. In addition to essential painting elements such as protracted lights, shadows, and colors, this collection is filled with a variety of visual symbols and layered with personal language. Within these hidden plots situated between reality and fabrication, the artist carefully selects texts and titles that carry themes of sci-fi novels to intensify the uncertain anxieties among his mystic colorful canvases. He aims to reflect the lack of adaptability contemporary human beings hold towards the face of future.
Wang’s art is often misunderstood as simple abstract works, however, it is only through certain distances that audience could peek the whole picture, for being too close often obscures the vision. In “Stargazers” series, Wang fosters scenes brimming with mists, diffusing color blocks as if they are sources of light, and placing vertical or parallel lines in between. These clashing elements form wrinkled folds resembling the surface of a prism. Reminiscent of the repetitive rendezvous of space and time, these folds extend visual confines of the second dimension, developing complex dimensions of intertwined space and time.
Those fables about the universe, civilization, myths, and history have not yet drawn their ends. The artist, with his multiple identities as both a participant and observer, brings these omnipresent stories into perpetuity. Art is truly Wang’s candor expression in an age of survival.
