“JAM WU : Paper-cut Doll and Earth Sign" is a creator who uses handcraft  to express his deep affection for his hometown, Tainan. It embodies an ineffable yet enduring sentiment, expressed through the slow, deliberate processes of paper-cutting and weaving.

Flowers bloom from the artist’s hand-cut paper, rooted in the soil of memory. The oldest city nourishes childhood recollections, while the past races around its roundabouts. Fish ponds, temple courtyards, the Shuixian Temple Market, Anping, and the Yanshuei River all feature prominently. The bridges crossed countless times with his grandmother form a landscape frozen in time. All these inspirations manifest the qualities of the earth sign in his creations.

Paper-cutting is recognized as a part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage, while weaving is a fundamental of tribal and primitive art. Both paper-cutting and weaving have long been associated with maternal and shamanic practices, depicting life and imagination, carving time, dyeing leaves, and bringing peace to the spirit within the home.
Series like “Bonfire — Weaving", “Dictionary", “Basking", and “Paper Cut-Outs" not only showcase the accumulated refined techniques in paper and fiber mixed media but also aim to break free from the constraints of mere craftsmanship, allowing the soul to roam more freely through this phase of work.
