Renowned Taiwanese mountain artist LIU De-Lang returns to Liang Gallery with his third solo exhibition, opening on 21st December. Through monumental oil paintings, from towering peaks to surging tides, he not only expresses his profound contemplation of this land but also bears witness to Taiwan’s geographical marvel— a remarkable island of merely 36,000 square kilometres that cradles more than 268 peaks above 3,000 metres, representing the world’s highest density of mountain summits.

Born in Hsinchu in 1958, LIU De-Lang approaches his subject matter with contemplative detachment, transforming geographical observation into artistic revelation. To him, artistic creation is a lifelong journey, a pure dialogue between emotion and vision. Each work emerges from genuine inner resonance, embodying a fearless creative venture that breaks free from traditional landscape conventions to reveal an unprecedented perspective of Taiwan’s mountainous beauty.

Landscapes are eternally on the road, present in every moment. As a mountaineer who has conquered Taiwan’s hundred peaks, LIU De-Lang has continued to venture deep into Taiwan’s mountain forests over the years. Each ascent becomes meditative journeys — each step, each glance, each moment of silence transforms into artistic expression. From Taiwan’s highest peak Jade Mountain to the magnificent Nanhu Mountain, from the precipitous Mount Chungyangjian to the distinctive Dabajian Mountain, his works transcend mere documentation to become profound artistic testimony.

His paintings, like the classical music he cherishes, orchestrate multiple layers of perception. Within the confined space of this island, where subtropical abundance meets alpine austerity, his unfettered artistic vision captures nature’s grand performance. Each canvas becomes a visual symphony, harmonising the vast expanse of mountain ranges with the quiet contemplation of passing time.

Just as nature follows its seasons, LIU De-Lang ‘s artistic expression has matured through years of dedication to his craft. This exhibition presents not only Taiwan’s extraordinary topography but also chronicles an artist’s unwavering commitment to his vision. Through his masterful brushwork, we witness both the magnificence and poignancy of this island nation, captured in a visual poetry that speaks uniquely of Taiwan.
