Liang Gallery is honoured to present the “Quo Ying-Sheng & Chien-Chi Chang: A Photography Exhibition " this March, offering a unique dialogue between two of Taiwan’s most significant photographic voices. Through their distinct visual languages, the exhibition invites viewers to explore the documentation and interpretation of social transformation, memory construction, and identity across local and global contexts.
Despite their divergent artistic trajectories, Quo Ying-Sheng and Chien-Chi Chang have cultivated parallel inquiries into cultural memory and identity. Quo Ying-Sheng ‘s contemplative lens captures the poetics of landscape through both monochrome and color imagery, revealing the spiritual essence and emotional resonance of place. Chien-Chi Chang, on the other hand, employs incisive visual narratives to examine human conditions within global power structures. From his “Escape from North Korea" series to his recent documentation of the Ukraine conflict, he consistently illuminates the complexities of life at society’s margins.
Though both photographers lived abroad for extended periods, Quo Ying-Sheng ultimately chose to return to Taiwan, creating an intriguing contrast between his “return" and Chien-Chi Chang’s continued “journey." As Quo Ying-Sheng states: “I use my creative work to redeem myself… it has become an attitude in my life, a mood, mixed with my photographs." Meanwhile, Chien-Chi Chang, as the first and only Taiwanese lifetime member of Magnum Photos, continues to capture the human condition under various power structures across the globe.
Upon entering the exhibition, visitors are first greeted by Quo Ying-Sheng’s black-and-white grassland series and coloured landscape works, presenting a poetic visual world. Moving toward the back, Chien-Chi Chang’s series of works unfold a profound contemplation on society and humanity. This carefully orchestrated progression allows viewers to experience how these two artists, through different visual strategies, explore profound questions of cultural heritage and self-positioning.
Together, their work creates a rich dialogue between approaches – Quo Ying-Sheng seeks eternal imprints in cultural memory through natural landscapes, while Chien-Chi Chang explores identity’s multiple possibilities through his examination of diaspora and global mobility. Despite their distinct artistic directions, both photographers reveal the transformative power of visual memory, inviting us to reconsider the multifaceted dimensions of belonging and cultural identity.
